Here’s how A 9-5 job motivated me to pursue a full-time creative career.

Art is a big part of my story.

Former HR Manager turned Makeup Artist. Here’s how a 9-5 job motivated me to pursue a full-time creative career.

I grew up with a love for art and painting. Although I was self-taught with zero techniques, I somehow could get the output right. I loved dressing up and playing with colours too; winging my eyes was never a problem. I always wanted to do some creative work for a living when I grew up. But I didn’t know where to start. Again, I was the first in the family to go for an offbeat career choice, but I was guided to pursue a regular degree, masters and then a work experience.

I graduated and joined as a human resource manager. I couldn’t make time for art. A little over 2 years passed without me touching my canvas board. One fine day, I tried painting and I couldn’t. I just couldn’t. And that crushed me. I was disturbed to an extent that I even stopped taking interest to present myself at work from then. Depression kicked in and I started whining.

There was finally a point when I stopped complaining and started working towards an alternative career option. Every weekend I dedicatedly practiced makeup on different skin tones and different textures with different products. Mistakes made and corrected. Rejections faced. I was fortunate that I had the best people around me to encourage and motivate, when in my mind I felt I was no good. I am so thankful for my first bride who trusted and booked me for her wedding. That was it. There was no looking back. I worked. Free work, paid work, anything and everything. Did various looks on myself so people would see it and allow me to try on them.

Instagram followers gave me so much of courage and support. They saw some potential in me that I never knew I had. They were the family that stood by me even without meeting or knowing me. That gave me the courage to get more creative. I ventured into special effects makeup. Got to the top 5 makeup artists of NYX face awards. I research a lot and that’s how I get to express the most though SFX & body painting.

My forte now lies in bridal makeup and creative makeup. I spend so much extra time in my bridal work. I love working on tinted skin. You’d never find me making a complexion lighter I just simply enhance what is there and I am glad my brides love that too. I feel so responsible and somehow share a special bond with my brides. If you’d worked with me, you’d know. It’s beyond a service provider and client relationship. We discuss ideas, I spam them with picture references just to make sure they look their best. Let’s just say I enjoy the additional responsibility. Makeup to me does not hide your beauty. It’s a form of expression.
